Shannon,

You should remove them until the swelling resides, then wear them for just an hour or two. Repeat this cycle for a couple days and your gums and mouth will acclimate to the new addition. It may take a little time but the benefits, once you learn how to chew and swallow properly, are wownderful.

I was told if I took them out in the first 24 hours I would not be able to get them back in again due to swelling. They are much more uncomfortable than I anticipated and I am unable to swallow, even pills, because the tongue doesn't have enough room to move normally and everything feels so different. It is currently 91 degrees and I can't even sip liquids. It has been 12 hours so far.

Take a break from dentures! You don't have to have them on 24/7. After all, you're probably home all daya and I'm sure your spouse wouldn't mind you not having them as long as it doesn't hurt you

Hygiene is very important with dentures, just as much as with regular teeth, if not more. Think of dentures as your second chance at dental hygiene :)
